In 1877, the Grand Orient de France abandoned the obligation to believe in God and in the immortality of the Soul, severing its ties with the United Grand Lodge of England. France became a Terra Incognita from the standpoint of Masonic regularity. French Freemasons residing in England found themselves cut off from their roots.
Seven years later, a small group of Brethren petitioned the Grand Lodge for a charter to work in French under English jurisdiction. The petition, signed by E.H. Thiellay, E. Monteuuis, H. Bué, L.A. Mesrouze, E. Dubois, E.H. Cadiot and V. Cerexhe, was favourably received. A charter was granted on 5 August 1884, signed by King Edward VII, then Prince of Wales and Grand Master. Lodge La France No. 2060 was consecrated on 20 October of that year.
In 1885, W.Bro Henri Bué translated the English ritual into French. The Lodge quickly flourished: eleven initiations in its first year, 24 members by 1885, and 65 initiations and 17 affiliations by 1898. This success led to the consecration of L'Entente Cordiale No. 2796 in 1899.
La France played a decisive role in the rebirth of regular Freemasonry on French soil. Three of its Worshipful Masters, W.Bros St-Clair, Le Forestier and Mondehare, served as intermediaries between English and French Brethren, paving the way for the recognition of the Grande Loge Nationale Indépendante et Régulière on 3 December 1913. The visit of its first Grand Master, Dr Édouard de Ribaucourt, on 19 January 1914 remains one of the great moments of Franco-British Freemasonry.
For over 140 years, La France has united Brethren from across the Francophone world, working the Emulation Ritual in French at Freemasons' Hall.
En 1877, le Grand Orient de France abandonna l'obligation de croire en Dieu et en l'immortalité de l'Âme, rompant ses liens avec la Grande Loge Unie d'Angleterre. La France devint alors une Terra Incognita du point de vue de la régularité maçonnique. Les Francs-Maçons français résidant en Angleterre se trouvèrent coupés de leurs racines.
Sept ans plus tard, un petit groupe de Frères sollicita de la Grande Loge une charte pour travailler en français sous obédience anglaise. La pétition, signée par les FF. E.H. Thiellay, E. Monteuuis, H. Bué, L.A. Mesrouze, E. Dubois, E.H. Cadiot et V. Cerexhe, fut bien accueillie. Une charte fut accordée le 5 août 1884, signée du Prince de Galles, Grand Maître de l'Ordre. La Loge La France n° 2060 fut consacrée le 20 octobre de la même année.
En 1885, le F. Henri Bué traduisit le rituel anglais en français. La Loge prospéra rapidement : onze initiations dès la première année, 24 membres en 1885, puis 65 initiations et 17 affiliations avant 1898. Ce succès conduisit à la consécration de L'Entente Cordiale n° 2796 en 1899.
La France joua un rôle décisif dans la renaissance de la Franc-Maçonnerie régulière en France. Trois de ses Vénérables, les FF. St-Clair, Le Forestier et Mondehare, servirent d'intermédiaires, contribuant à la reconnaissance de la Grande Loge Nationale Indépendante et Régulière le 3 décembre 1913. La visite de son premier Grand Maître, le Dr de Ribaucourt, le 19 janvier 1914 demeure l'un des grands moments de la Franc-Maçonnerie franco-britannique.
Depuis plus de 140 ans, La France réunit des Frères de l'ensemble du monde francophone, pratiquant le Rituel Émulation en français au Freemasons' Hall.
